If you play sports or participate in any physical work or activity that may present a significant risk to your teeth, a sports guard mouth protector is highly recommended by Dr. Smurthwaite and the American Dental Association (ADA). Why Use A Sports Guard?Damage to your teeth and the roots of your teeth caused by blunt trauma can be permanent or lead to corrective measures that have significant cost and discomfort. Using a sports guard mouth protector is easy, inexpensive and covers the upper teeth, minimizing the effects of a blow to the face, reducing the risk of broken or traumatized teeth and damage to soft tissues of the mouth. Types of Mouth Protector Sports GuardsCustom Fit - Custom fit mouth protectors are created in the dental office. They are the "best fit" protector of choice and remain firmly in place during activity. Custom fit mouth protectors are an excellent choice for anybody that is frequently involved in an activity that may result in blunt trauma to the mouth. Your custom fit mouth guard can be the color(s) of your choice and even be customized with your name, team logo, custom drawing, or any other writing you would like on it! Stock - Stock mouth protectors can be purchased at most sporting good stores or via the internet. They are less expensive than custom fit mouth protectors but do not usually fit well. Because stock mouth protectors do not fit well, they can be an impediment to breathing. Heat and Bite - Heat and bite protectors are a do-it-yourself custom fit solution. Purchased at most sporting good stores, heat and bite mouth protectors are placed in warm water to soften the material they are made from. Once softened, the protector is placed in the mouth and allowed to cool around the teeth, creating a custom fit. Heat and bite protectors often do not form correctly and may become uneven in the way they sit on the teeth. Fit Is ImportantIt is important that your mouth guard fit properly. A mouth guard that does not fit properly may actually do more harm than good. Those who wear braces should consult the dentist regarding proper fit for both upper and lower teeth. Also, if you are the parent of a child using a sports guard, inspect the guard often and confirm with your child that the guard is fitting properly. As children grow, it may become necessary to replace their sports guard to accommodate for changes in the mouth. Health Concerns and Mouth GuardsIt goes without saying that a mouth guard should never be shared with another person, regardless of the situation. Regular care should be taken to clean the mouth guard using soap and water, mouthwash or other oral disinfectants. Proper care of your mouth guard will insure that health is not compromised. |
