What is Teeth Whiting?

Teeth whitening or bleaching (peroxide whitening gel application) is the process of whitening teeth using a bleaching agent. There are many teeth whitening systems available today, some for over the counter-whitening and some for application by a dentist. Generally speaking, over the counter whitening systems can be messy, take an extended period of time to work, and cannot be monitored by a professional for common side effects.

Is Teeth Whitening For Me?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that produces high results for minimal cost compared to other cosmetic procedures. Determining whether you are a candidate for teeth whitening is based on several factors including the type of discoloration you have, the presence of veneers or other cosmetic porcelain replacements and the amount of time you want to spend whitening your teeth.

For in-office whitening, you can generally expect to be in and out of our Rocklin dentist office in about two hours with a brighter smile.

For custom whitening trays that you use at home, we can make them for you within two business days and then you control the rate at which you whiten your teeth. Also, a great benefit is that if you are a Star Patient* you will receive whitening gel for life!!

Basic Teeth Whitening Procedure

  1. Teeth Cleaning - This is important to insure an even bleaching surface.
  2. Sample Teeth Color - A sampling of existing teeth color is made for comparative results.
  3. Determine Teeth To Be Whitened - Not all teeth have to be whitened to get the desire results you are looking for. In some cases, where other cosmetic dental work has been performed, teeth will be isolated and bleached to match the existing cosmetic changes. It is important to remember that the bleaching agent reacts differently to porcelain and a real tooth.
  4. Apply Teeth Bleaching Solution.
  5. Remove whitening solution.

In some cases the dentist will want to apply a protective fluoride treatment after the whitening procedure. This can assist teeth in regaining mineral content lost by bleaching and also helps the teeth deal with hot and cold sensitivity.
