Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants? 7 Questions to Ask First

Reviewed by Dr. Charles Smurthwaite, DDS, MS ·

The short answer

Most adults who are missing one or more teeth and have healthy gums and enough jawbone can be implant candidates. If bone has thinned, grafting can often rebuild it. A consultation with 3D imaging is the only way to know for sure.

1. Are my gums healthy?

Implants need healthy gums to stay stable. If there is gum disease, we treat it first.

2. Do I have enough jawbone?

After a tooth is lost, the bone underneath can shrink. A CBCT 3D scan measures your bone so we can plan precisely, and grafting can often add bone where needed.

3. Do I smoke?

Smoking slows healing and raises the risk of implant failure. Quitting — even around the time of surgery — improves your odds.

4. Do I have health conditions to discuss?

Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, and some medications, can affect healing. Share your full medical history so your dentist can plan safely.

5. How many teeth am I replacing?

A single implant can replace one tooth. Several implants can support a bridge or stabilize dentures.

6. Am I comfortable with a multi-month process?

Implants typically take a few months from placement to final crown while the implant bonds with your bone.

7. Would sedation help me feel at ease?

If you are anxious, ask about sedation options. Many patients are surprised how comfortable the procedure is.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old for dental implants?

Age alone is rarely the deciding factor. Overall health, gum health and bone volume matter more.

What if I’ve been told I don’t have enough bone?

Bone grafting can often rebuild the area. A 3D scan shows exactly what’s needed.
